Counselling is the service offered to the individual who is undergoing a problem and needs professional help to overcome it. The problem keeps him disturbed high strung and under tension and unless solved his development is hampered or stunted. Counseling therefore is a more specialized service requiring training in personality development and handling exceptional groups of individuals.

උපදේශනය යනු ගැටලුවකට මුහුණ දී සිටින සහ එයින්

Counseling services are therefore required for individuals having developmental problems because of the handicap they suffer in any area of emotional either because of hereditary factors or environment conditions. Counseling involves a lot of time for the client to unfold the problem, gain an insight in to the complex situation.

    Counseling techniques involve active listening, emphatic understanding releasing the pent up feelings confronting the client and so on counseling therefore is offered to only those individuals who are under serious problem and need professional help to overcome it.

    • The problems addressed by counseling psychology are addressed from developmental (lifespan), environmental and cultural perspectives. They include, but are not limited to:

      • School and career/work adjustment concerns.

    What can I expect in Family Counselling?

    You will meet with a counsellor, who will provide confidential and non-judgemental support, and who will encourage everyone who comes to have their say and to share their feelings, if they wish.

    At the first appointment, the counsellor will ask you to talk through what’s happening, and what you’d like to change. You will then work with the counsellor to decide what happens next.

    Counselling is a different experience for everyone, and what happens in your sessions will depend very much on what you hope to get out of it, and on the unique needs of your family.

    You can expect Family Counselling to help you to build stronger relationships between every member of the family and help you to work together as a team.

    How can counselling services help my child?

    Many young people are struggling with how they feel. They are having problems with friends, family or school, they are anxious, depressed, angry or scared and need to talk to someone, but find it difficult to talk to people they know. Counselling and other advice services can help them talk things through, support them without making them feel judged, and in confidence (unless they disclose that their personal safety is at risk). Advice services can make a positive difference to their lives.

    How counselling can help young people

    Counselling could be recommended for young people who are basically healthy but who are struggling with a mental health disorder such as depression or eating disorders; it can address problems with anxiety, bereavement; bullying, anger, relationships, low self-esteem, and self-harm. The counsellor will help explore the problem, the symptoms and strategies for coping.

    What is EMDR Therapy

    Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological stress. It is an effective treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

    During EMDR therapy sessions, you relive traumatic or triggering experiences in brief doses while the therapist directs your eye movements.

    EMDR is thought to be effective because recalling distressing events is often less emotionally upsetting when your attention is diverted. This allows you to be exposed to the memories or thoughts without having a strong psychological response. Over time, this technique is believed to lessen the impact that the memories or thoughts have on you.

    Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art to help people express themselves and improve their well- being.
    It can be used by people of all ages and abilities.

    Art therapy exercises :
    Drawing or painting your emotions, creating an emotion wheel, making a meditative painting, putting together a journal, exploring puppet therapy.

    How it works :
    * Art therapy uses visual and tactile media to help people express their thoughts and feelings
    * It can help people discover an outlet for complex feelings
    * It can promote self – awareness, self-compassion and sense of agency and self worth
    * It can help people improve their mental health and interpersonal relationships
